I have a 1987 Spider Veloce that we purchased new. After reviewing my log book, I came up with a list of repaired and replaced components that you may want to keep an eye on as you consider the age and mileage of your car. You will notice some trends and can gauge the life expectancy of your car's components. Add about 12,000 miles more to figures over 128,000 miles since my odo/speedometer did not work for three years:
ENGINE:
58,000 mi & 5 yrs age -- head rebuilt due to stuck exhaust valve (my stupidity for not changing oil often enough)
129,000 mi & 17 yrs age -- repaired flywheel ring gear (broken tooth), rear engine seal (leaking), engine mounts (sagging, rubber cracking off)
150,000 mi & 23 yrs age -- replaced front crankshaft seal (leaking oil)
FUEL & EXHAUST SYSTEMS:
51,000 mi & 4 yrs age -- replaced fuel pump (quit working)
128,000 mi & 11 yrs age -- replaced rear muffler, removed catalytic converter (unit OK), replaced manifold & down pipes with tubular header system
150,000 mi & 22 yrs age -- replaced fuel pump mounts (rubber soft causing pump to clunk against floor)
151,000 mi & 23 yrs age -- replaced center muffler (cracks at welds & loose baffle)
IGNITION, STARTING, CHARGING SYSTEMS:
125,000 mi & 10 yrs age -- replaced coil
129,000 mi & 14 yrs age -- replaced starter (housing cracked)
133,000 mi & 15 yrs age -- replaced ignition switch (key would not turn)
151,000 mi & 23 yrs age -- replaced alternator (preventive care as the old one still worked)
COOLING SYSTEM:
58,000 mi & 5 yrs age -- cleaned, rodded, repaired radiator leak
125,000 mi & 10 yrs age -- replaced water pump (leaking)
128,000 mi & 12 yrs age -- cleaned, rodded, repaired radiator leak
130,000 mi & 13 yrs age -- replaced radiator fan (blade broke off), fan shroud (cracked)
150,000 mi & 23 yrs age -- repaired radiator leaks
CLUTCH, GEARBOX:
56,000 mi & 5 yrs age -- rebuilt clutch master & slave cylinders
82,000 mi & 6 yrs age -- replaced clutch pedal assembly pivot pin (weld twisted off)
123,000 mi & 9 yrs age -- rebuilt clutch master & slave cylinders
129,000 mi & 14 yrs age -- rebuilt clutch master & slave cylinders, replaced clutch disk (slipping), pressure plate, throwout bearing, fr & rr gearbox seals, gearbox support bushings & rear bushing (rubber bushings turned to mush)
145,000 mi & 21 yrs age -- replaced clutch slave cylinder (corroded inside)
147,000 mi & 21 yrs age -- rebuilt clutch master
PROPELLER SHAFT:
58,000 mi & 5 yrs age -- replaced center bearing support & donut (clunking)
66,000 mi & 5 yrs age -- replaced U-joints (clunking -- should have done at same time as donut)
128,000 mi & 11 yrs age -- replaced center bearing support & donut (clunking)
REAR AXLE, DIFFERENTIAL, AXLE SHAFTS:
42,000 mi & 3 years age -- replaced left rear wheel bearing (noisy, defective, under warranty)
FRONT SUSPENSION:
125,000 mi & 11 yrs age -- replaced inner & outer tie rod ends (no looseness but dried out & squeaking; drilled & added grease zircs to new ones), upper control arms with ball joints, lower ball joints (clunking)
129,000 mi & 13 yrs age -- replaced upper control arm caster bushings (rubber tore), replaced lower A-arm bushings (squeaking for years)
147,000 mi & 22 yrs age -- replaced shock absorbers
REAR SUSPENSION:
130,000 mi & 16 yrs age -- replaced rear axle inner a& outer limit straps (delaminating)
137,000 mi & 18 yrs age -- recentered rear antiroll bar (rubbing & clunking on body frame)
147,000 mi & 22 yrs age -- replaced shock absorbers
BRAKES:
55,000 mi & 4 yrs age -- replaced pads (fr down 1/2, rr down 2/3), rebuilt master cylinder (leaking)
105,000 mi & 8 yrs age -- replaced pads (fr down 1/2, rr down 2/3), rebuilt master cylinder
129,000 mi & 14 yrs age -- replaced master cylinder
138,000 mi & 17 yrs age -- replaced emergency brake cable
139,000mi & 19 yrs age -- replaced front brake rotors (rt side badly scored), replaced fr & rr rubber brake hoses, pads (fr down 1/2, rr down 2/3)
CHASSIS ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTS:
128,000 mi & 10 yrs age -- speedometer rebuilt (quit working a couple years prior)
132,000 mi & 15 yrs age -- disassembled washer/wiper switch & cleaned contacts (washer pump not working)
134,000 mi & 15 yrs age -- replaced speedometer cable (twisted off at transmission)
147,000 mi & 21 yrs age -- reconditioned electric window motor (water corrosion)
BODY & TRIM:
50,000 mi & 4 yrs age -- replaced window regulator (cable broke)
107,000 mi & 8 yrs age -- replaced fabric top (rotted)
128,000 mi & 11 yrs age -- replaced spare wheel well & front fender splash shields (rusted)
134,000 mi & 16 yrs age -- replaced rocker panels (rusted), replaced door panels (rotten at bottom)
136,000 mi & 17 yrs age -- replaced seat leather covers (cracked)
VENTILATION, HEATING, AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS:
150,000 mi & 23 yrs age -- replaced A/C compressor (quit working a year earlier)
